Yes, guilty as charged! I do have what photographers call GAS -- Gear Acquisition Syndrome. (No, it's not what you thought, get your head our of the gutter.) I DO love brand new gear. I DO love having the latest and greatest gear. I am a total gear nerd. Having the right equipment does make a difference, but it's not everything. It's the human brain behind the camera, the skill, the passion that makes a good photographer. The tools are just a means to get the job done.
A good photographer will be able to make a good image regardless what gear he or she has. They understand how light behaves. They know how to compose a good image and can play with color and shapes to compose something that is aesthetically pleasing. They can pose their models, anticipate what is likely to happen next, and place themselves at the right place and at the right time. Above all, they are able to tell a story and convey an emotion through their images. They take images that matter!
As many photographers say, the best camera is the one you have on you. All of us have a camera on us all the time; that camera is our phones.
Here is a great tutorial on how to make the most of the features that are available on your iPhone. I hear someone say, "if your life is worth living is worth recording." Every now and then, you will want to actually be in the photo, and have a special image that is a keep sake, something you will pass along to future generations. When you are ready, give me a call and let's make some great images together!
